Security for your equipment data room or work station

Ensuring data security as IT continues to dominate business and government operations, companies need to be certain  their network electronic equipment is safe by using  locked data racks and enclosures along with security cameras and firewalls.  Although we usually believe security threats come from outside thieves or cyber hackers many breaks in security come from internal personnel.

Unauthorized internal access to servers and workstations  is among the most common threat to a business’ security. The 2008 CSI Computer Crime and Security Survey reports that insider abuse ranks among the top two security concerns, with 44% of security professionals citing the threat.

More and more IT managers are utilizing locked security cabinets and enclosures for their electronics including servers and even lock boxes for their dvr equipment. Keys are given only to those in charge for safe keeping. Additionally, security cameras whether covert or clearly mounted in your office or server room act as the number 1 prevention tool for business putting any potential burglar on notice. Server racks and enclosures offered by US manufactured companies like Kendall Howard and Middle Atlantic Products and security cameras from Hawk-i and Golden State Instrument offer some of your best solutions for securing your business data. Quality products such as these can be purchased at very economical prices from Value Tech Supply ( A leader in providing security products ,they guarantee great service and their prices are very competitive.

Personal Experience with the Freedom Alert

Well you always think you are buying a gadget that sounds good to use but never really know if it will come in handy for you. This was the case when I bought my 83 year old mother a LogicMark Freedom Alert 911 system from for Mothers Day. It is a pendant that my mom wears around her neck in the house. In an emergency she can press the button and it will call up to 4 people and 911 in any sequence you program. There are no monthly fees I had to pay and no contract or activation fees. I figured this would be a great thing to have in case of emergency. She has severe Osteoporosis and Parkinsons Disease. I always worry about her falling and not being there to help her.  I felt like she had some protection 24 hours a day even if no one was at home. Two weeks after I got the unit , my mom fell going from the porch to the den on a sliding glass door track. She was shuffling her feet and did not see where she was going. She fell face first into the carpeting and fractured her sternum. Luckily she was wearing her Freedom Alert and she contacted me immediately. We called 911 and the paramedics took her to the hospital within a few minutes. I was able to meet her there and help with the hospital admission process. Since the incident she was moved to a rehab facility and is coming home wednesday. We are excited for her to come home again and I feel confident that her Freedom Alert medical system will once again be there for her in case of emergency. I loved the fact that it called me so I knew exactly what was going on and could talk to my mom  during this crisis. It is a personal communicator that I am now convinced anyone young or old with any disability should not be without.

  3. Check your smoke detectors to see if they are working. If not, check the batteries or install a replacement smoke detector. Even this small adjustment to your home can save lives.

  4. Think about using hidden security cameras to monitor your nanny or babysitter when you’re not home. It’s best to know what is going one rather than to turn a blind eye when it comes to the safety of your children.

  5. Lock away your valuables in a specially designed security safe or lock box.

  6. Finally, consider installing an outdoor security camera near your street or on your property to monitor suspicious vehicles or activity.

First Apartment Security Must-Haves

Having a first apartment is incredibly exciting – but just because you’re moving into a new place doesn’t mean that there’s not a whole lot to do to protect yourself. In fact, new apartment residents should be aware that their new living space may not be as safe as it seems. You need to take steps and precautions to ensure that your new home is never put into a state of danger or compromise by equipping your first apartment with these safety and security must-haves:

  1. Smoke Detector

This one may seem like a no brainer, but some new apartment owners forget to check if they have a working smoke detector in their new space. Be sure to check yours regularly to ensure that it’s working properly. You should have a smoke detector installed on every floor, not too close to walls or corners.

  1. Burglar Alarm

Security precautions like a burglar alarm can pay off in the long run, so it pays to invest in one early on. Also, if you want complete protection, consider also installing a complete security camera kit.

  1. New Door Locks

Moving into a new space is exciting, but you never can be too careful. Be sure that you change the locks as soon as you move in because you never know who may have a key. Discuss this with your landlord prior.

  1. Dead Bolt

Also, it may not be a bad idea to change the dead bolt, or if you don’t have one, to install one. This is just one extra layer of security that can protect you in your new home.

  1. Window Locks

If you don’t have window locks, it may be a good idea for you to install them on all windows, or at least those which are easily accessible from the ground or from your roof.

  1. Surge Protectors

Your apartment will probably only have a few outlets and you’ll most likely have a lot more devices to use. Don’t risk an electrical fire or a blown fuse and instead, use surge protectors from day one. These simple devices will ensure that your plugs don’t cause clutter and that you can stay safe while using electrical devices.

Security System Shopping Made Easy

At first glance, shopping for a security system can seem challenging. After all, there are so many things to consider when you make a purchase that could either make or break the security of your business. Navigating through the process is easier than it first appears, though, as long as you know what to look for when you shop.

First consider your budget. When it comes time to actually start building your security system, this is going to be one of the most important considerations you face. Balancing the features you want against the cost you’ve budgeted for can be tricky, but smart comparison shopping pays off. Kits that include indoor or outdoor security cameras, a monitor and the dvr plus cabling needed can be your most economical approach.

Think about where you plan to install your security system. This is an often-overlooked step.

*Will it be used indoors or outdoors?
*What spaces are you planning on putting cameras in?
*Are there special needs regarding these locations, or the operation of the system in general?
*Is there enough space for all of the equipment?
*Can it be monitored and controlled conveniently?

Finally, consider how you plan to use your security system. What features do you need it to have? Are there any must-have details that cannot be overlooked? Also, what features can you compromise on? When you prepare to research your purchase, having a clear idea of what you need versus what you want will help make your choice quick and simple.

10 Tips for Securing Your Business

Even with the utmost safety precautions in place, break-ins or other incidents can still happen; that’s why, in so many cases, how you prepare for that eventuality is as important as how you try to prevent it.

Is your business prepared to handle security situations that can pop up when you least expect them? If you’re a business owner that wants to make sure that the business is always safe and secure, consider these tips:

  1. If you’ve just moved to a new location, be sure that you change the locks so that previous tenants of the space don’t have access.
  2. Learn the police patrol schedules around your business and take some time to meet the officers. Ask to be alerted of any activity in the area so you can make arrangements accordingly.
  3. Frequently test your alarm systems, smoke detectors, and other security equipment such as cameras and your dvr so that you know that it’s working at its best. Proper maintenance on these devices ensures that you’re never left unprotected.
  4. Take some time to go over your business from floor to ceiling. Look for areas that could pose a danger, be easier to break-in to, or cause you any other concern. Take the appropriate action.
  5. Always be sure that your employees are locking and securing the building properly as they come and go.
  6. If you use computers for storing valuable information about your business, be sure that its secured with the right firewalls and anti-virus software. You don’t want to lose all your records thanks to a simple email attachment or a stray website.
  7. Make sure that areas surrounding your business are well-lit and offer little chance for a criminal to hide, like thorny landscaping or very short shrubs.
  8. If you run to make deposits to the bank, make sure that you aren’t going at the same time everyday and are taking different routes.
  9. Install a security system that offers you the protection you need. Depending on your use, consider both indoor and outdoor security cameras or even covert cameras as necessary. Make sure you have a dvr and monitor to secure the evidence if your property is compromised in any way.
  10. Have a clear emergency plan that you and your employees can enforce in a time of chaos. Remember, it pays to be prepared.
